Selection Process: A Skill-Based Merit System

The selection process for the post of Stenotypist is unique and multi-staged, with a heavy emphasis on practical stenography skills rather than written exam marks for the final merit.

  1. Written Examination (Qualifying Only):
    • All eligible candidates will have to appear for an objective type (MCQ) written examination.
    • This exam will have two parts: Part-A (Punjabi Qualifying Test) and Part-B (Main Examination).
    • Part-A (Punjabi Language Qualifying Test): This test will be of 10th standard level. It is mandatory to score a minimum of 50% marks to qualify. This part is purely qualifying in nature, and its marks will not be considered for the merit list.
    • Part-B (Main Examination): Candidates who clear Part-A will have their Part-B evaluated. It is also mandatory to score a minimum of 50% marks in Part-B to qualify for the next stage. However, the marks of Part-B will also not be considered for the final merit list.
  2. Punjabi Stenography Test (Merit Determining Stage):
    • Candidates who qualify in both parts of the written examination will be called for the Punjabi Stenography Test.
    • This test will be conducted at a speed of 80 words per minute. It will consist of two paragraphs of 200 words each.
    • Candidates will have to transcribe the dictated passage on a computer at a speed of 15 words per minute.
    • A maximum of 8% mistakes will be permissible. Candidates making more than 8% mistakes will be disqualified.
  3. Final Merit List Preparation:
    • The final merit list will be prepared solely on the basis of the number of mistakes made in the Stenography Test.
    • The candidate with the fewest mistakes will be placed at the top of the merit list. The written exam scores are completely discarded for merit preparation.
    • In case of a tie (i.e., two or more candidates have the same number of mistakes), the older candidate will be given preference.
  4. Document Verification (Counseling): Candidates will be called for document verification (counseling) based on their position in the final merit list.

How to Prepare for the PSSSB Stenotypist Exam

A dual-focus preparation strategy is required: one to qualify the written test and another, more intensive one, to excel in the stenography test.

  1. For the Written Examination (Qualifying):
    • Part-A (Punjabi): Do not take this lightly. Revise your 10th standard Punjabi grammar and practice comprehension. Scoring 50% is mandatory.
    • Part-B: Cover the basics of all subjects mentioned in the syllabus. Since it is only qualifying, focus on your strong areas to ensure you clear the 50% cut-off. Practice with previous PSSSB question papers.
  2. For the Stenography Test (Merit-Making):
    • Daily Practice is Key: Dedicate several hours daily to stenography practice. Your goal is not just speed, but extreme accuracy.
    • Build Speed Gradually: Start with lower speeds and gradually increase to 80 wpm and beyond. Use dictation audios from various sources (news, editorials, etc.).
    • Focus on Accuracy: Every mistake counts towards your final rank. Pay close attention to grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
    • Transcription Practice: Practice transcribing on a computer. Improve your Punjabi typing speed to comfortably meet the 15 wpm transcription requirement.

Best Books for Preparation

Here is a list of recommended resources for your preparation:

  • Punjabi Stenography: Standard Punjabi shorthand practice books and magazines.
  • General Knowledge (Punjab): "Know Your State - Punjab" by Arihant Publications.
